CFW 2016 Tribute to Prince

Pulse is pleased to announce that Caribbean Fashionweek 2016 is the Caribbean tribute to global fashion icon and music superstar Prince, featuring his band Morris Day & The Time live! The Prince tribute is particularly relevant to CFW, as he was not only one of the greatest musical superstars who ever lived, he was also one of the world’s great stylists. Many CFW designers and Caribbean master designers will be creating Prince inspired looks and collections for the event.

Prince fans will remember the blockbuster movie Purple Rain, which not only featured Prince, but also  Morris Day and the Time, a Prince project. Prince music will permeate the 2016 renewal of CFW as collections will come down the runway against a backdrop of his many anthems.

Born in Minneapolis, Morris Day went to school with the world-famous pop artist Prince, singing in his first band Grand Central. The Time was originally created as Prince’s alter-ego, and after looking at several lead vocalists, Prince decided to cast someone with mad talent as the band’s frontman … so he chose Day, his high school friend. Soon after, Morris Day & the Time were cast in “Purple Rain,” which captured the exploding Minneapolis music scene at its peak. Combined sales of Morris Day’s solo work and The Time’s releases, is in excess of 10 million units. Prince songs have sold more than 100 million units.

There are a number of key changes in store for CFW fans this year. For one, CFW will be held at Pulse’s Villa Ronai, Old Stony Hill Road, where much of the 9 acre grounds and buildings will be transformed into a magical fashion village, featuring suspended runways, waterfall backdrops, etc., within the natural unique beauty of Villa Ronai.

The event will be further expanded this year within the concept of Total Fashion (started in 2015) with restaurants, bars, boutiques, spas and gyms becoming participating partners, offering special CFW discounts to patrons for services, as well as CFW tickets, as everyone preps for the event.

British magazine Pride and Pulse are partnering with a special Model / Designer Search competition in the UK market, which will bring winners and press to Jamaica for CFW and stimulate the market in the UK for visitors to attend the event. Another of the special features for 2016, is a partnership with a UK professional group who are hosting a “Women on the Frontline Networking & Empowerment Summit” at CFW this year. They will participate in the Business Forum as well as attend the shows and other events.

CFW 2016 will be produced by a strong Pulse team led by CEO Safia Cooper, with direct responsibility in the hands of Pulse Fashion Director, Romae Gordon. Chairman, Kingsley Cooper will continue to be Executive Producer of the event, providing support and guidance as needed.

As usual, CFW will feature Jamaica’s and the Caribbean’s best designers, as well as international designers. In the past a host of entertainers including Joe, Kelly Rowland, Brian McKnight, Maxi Priest, Billy Ocean, Eve, Nia Long and others, have performed at the event. Once again local and international celebrities and VIPs are invited to CFW and a significant number are expected to attend.

Pulse supermodels (such as the #1 international superstar from the Caribbean, Jeneil Williams, as well as Nell Robinson and Oraine Barrett) will attend the event, as well as new Pulse stars such as French, German and Spanish Vogue models Francine James and Alicia Burke. An emerging designer showcase will be held in the early days of the event, thereby giving the best new talent from that showcase, an opportunity to show on the main stage during the final CFW weekend.

Designer development will be further pursued through the annual Business Forum, The Exhibition Hall, buyer outreach and features in the event’s Look Book. The entertainment offerings at CFW will be strengthened by the popular After Parties each night as well as the closing event on the Monday after the final CFW weekend.
